MegaWolf, Inc. Announces Acquisition of MacForth Product Line

February 16, 2001, New Haven, CT. MegaWolf, Inc. today announced that it has acquired the MacForth Product Line (MacForth Plus and Power MacForth). “We are very pleased to pick up the torch for the oldest continuously supported commercial Macintosh development environment,” said Kathy Stephens, MegaWolf’s CEO.

MacForth is a powerful native Macintosh programming environment that features ANS standard Forth with complete Mac toolbox support, versatile internal multitasking, a built-in assembler, and numerous built-in productivity tools. MacForth can variously be characterized as a programming language, an extremely powerful scripting language, a real-time control application, a hardware testing suite, an extensible macro assembler, or a platform for software experimentation. Built on the highly flexible and efficient Forth programming language, the powerful built-in parser, compiler, and assembler can be customized for almost any programming task. MacForth is highly compact, requiring less than 3 Meg of disk space and 1 Meg of RAM for a full development system including editor, parser, compiler and assembler (an additional 12 Meg is required to include all electronic documentation.)

Initially released in 1984 for the original Macintosh by Creative Solutions, MacForth was acquired in 1995 by Forth, Inc. (www.forth.com), an industry leader in Forth programming systems. Forth, Inc. is narrowing their focus onto their growing family of embedded and Windows-based Forth products, and have chosen to let MacForth return to a company specializing in Macintosh software development.

MegaWolf's interest in MacForth is longstanding. For years, they have used its interactive nature and its easy scriptability during development and testing of their hardware products. All of their hardware utilities are written in MacForth, as well. It also happens that their Technical Director, Ward McFarland, has been involved throughout MacForth's life with its development, maintenance, and support. “We look forward to working with current and new MacForth users to continue MacForth as a fun and productive tool for working on the Macintosh,” he said.

MegaWolf plans to continue the long history of MacForth, starting with a free minor upgrade to existing users to be released very shortly. A “Carbonized” version is currently running on OSX and is nearly ready for a public beta release. A final OSX compatible version is expected to ship very soon after the OSX final rollout.
